When they selected former Michigan signal-caller J.J. McCarthy 10th overall in the 2024 NFL take, the Minnesota Vikings utilized a top-10 pick to take a quarterback for the first time in the team’s history.

McCarthy, who suffered season-ending knee surgery during the team’s opening preseason game last month, will sadly miss his whole debut campaign with the Vikings. Minnesota seems eager to see what they can do in the future with the rookie quarterback under center, despite the setback, given what they saw from him prior to his injury.

McCarthy is the Vikings’ new starting quarterback, but not everyone thinks the team is completely happy with him. As early as 2025, according to a local Twin Cities columnist, Minnesota might add another signal-caller in the first round of the draft.

When Jimmy Johnson was in Dallas, he had Troy Aikman as his quarterback. But he also spent a first-round pick in the 1989 supplemental draft to take Steve Walsh from Miami via St. Paul. Once Aikman won the starting job, the Cowboys traded Walsh to the New Orleans Saints for first-, second- and third-round draft picks The New Orleans Saints acquired Walsh from the Cowboys in exchange for first-, second-, and third-round draft picks.

While that is true, one of the safest bets a human being on this planet can currently make is that Minnesota will not be using a top-five draft pick on a quarterback prospect a year after selecting McCarthy.

There has literally been no indication of the Vikings having even a sliver of interest in drafting another quarterback in the first round next year. In fact, the Minnesota Star Tribune’s Ben Goessling shared on a recent episode of the “Access Vikings” podcast that he heard the team would have been okay with playing McCarthy sooner than expected in 2024.

Minnesota loved what they saw from their rookie quarterback this offseason, and the team using a top-five draft pick on another young passer in 2025 would be an incredibly foolish decision.
