Report: Gonzaga, Baylor have concluded their discussions about conference opener in Mexico City..
As 2024–25 college basketball season draws near, talk of a nonconference game between Gonzaga and Baylor—two of the preseason’s top-10 teams—continues to gain momentum.
The teams that faced off in the 2021 national championship are still planning to play early in the season as of Thursday, but it appears the Zags and Bears are looking at other options after CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander revealed the schools were interested in playing in Las Vegas.
During Thursday’s Locked On Zags broadcast with host Andy Patton, Bracketeer.org’s Rocco Miller shared details about a possible first week game between the college basketball powerhouses in Mexico City.
Miller stated, citing several sources, that the highly anticipated nonconference showdown will occur on November 6, the third day of the collegiate basketball schedule for 2024–2025. Given that the Bulldogs don’t have another game scheduled until Nov. 10, when they visit Arizona State at the McCarthey Athletic Center, that would probably constitute GU’s season opener.
According to the report, major TV networks have expressed no interest in acquiring the broadcast rights for a game in Mexico City. Instead, streaming service FloSports is expected to provide on-demand viewing for the match.
According to Miller, Gonzaga and Baylor are still open to having an early-season match at a neutral location, most likely Las Vegas, if they are unable to come to an agreement to play in the Mexican capital.
Originally scheduled to take place in Mexico in 2024, the Big 12 Conference postponed the basketball, baseball, and soccer matches—which included a men’s basketball match between Houston and Kansas—until 2025.
Gonzaga has adopted an aggressive “anybody, anywhere” strategy for its nonconference schedule under longtime coach Mark Few, playing a range of top-tier and elite programs in challenging road arenas and distinctive neutral-site locations.
The Bulldogs have only ever left the country for a single game—they went to Okinawa, Japan, in 2015 to play Pittsburgh in the Armed Forces Classic—apart from excursions to the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas. The treacherous court conditions late in the first half caused the game to be canceled.
