Seven people are killed by gunmen in a new attack in Benue State on September 2, including four police officers.
In an attack by armed gunmen in Benue state, central Nigeria, seven people were killed, including three police officers, according to police reports on Monday by The incident in Anyiin on Sunday night, which is the latest instance of intercommunal violence in the area, was carried out by the attackers, known as bandits locally.
According to Anene Sewuese Catherine, a spokeswoman for the Benue police, a big group of gunmen broke into the village at around 4:30 pm (1530 GMT) and started shooting randomly at the residents.
Three police officers were killed in the process of putting an end to the attack, and seven villagers were shot dead.
The attackers “left with their dead and injured,” according to a statement from Sewuese Catherine. The area around Logo in Benue has been the scene of protracted fighting, with multiple deaths reported by officials. Clashes between farmers and nomadic cattle herders over land use have often resulted in ethnic and religious overtones. Sewuese Catherine mentioned that police commissioner Hassan Steve Yabanet has sent more teams to combat the bandits.
