Jake Paul discusses a possible Mike Tyson successor as “behind the scenes” information regarding the legend’s health surface.
Regarding the possibility of competing against Mike Tyson in their rescheduled boxing showdown later this year, Jake Paul has spoken out regarding worries about the heavyweight legend’s fitness to compete.
The original plan was for Paul, 27, to take on Tyson, 58, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on July 20.
However, the fight was called off after the former heavyweight champion experienced an ulcer flare-up in May while traveling.
Instead, Paul faced off against veteran UFC fighter Mike Perry. The YouTuber-turned-boxer won via TKO in the sixth round, improving his professional record to 11-1. His lone loss came in a fight with Tommy Fury in February of last year.
It has been rescheduled for November 15th, and Netflix will stream the fight live from the same location. Paul vs. Tyson
Tyson’s fighting prowess has been under scrutiny due to the significant age gap between him and the prior opponent.
Paul, though, says he is so sure the bout will happen later this year that he hasn’t lined up a backup opponent in case Tyson withdraws again.
“I’m not worried,” Paul said to TMZ.
“He’s doing fantastically. Behind the scenes, he’s in excellent health and feels fantastic.
“So that’s what we are focusing on and there is not a back-up currently.”
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation has controversially approved the fight as a professional heavyweight match.
But instead of using 10 oz gloves, both boxers will be using 14 oz gloves, and the bout will last eight two-minute rounds under the revised rules.
During a press conference held last month, Tyson vowed to disprove those who doubted his ability to defeat Paul, despite his advanced age.
“I’m very prepared [to knock out Jake Paul],” Tyson said.
I had a small adversity. I got sick, but I feel good. I’m just ready. I’m going to give my talk, and I’m going to speak my sh**, but I’m ready to fight.”
