You assumed tuk-tuks were restricted to popular tourist destinations in Asia? This tourist was going to Airlie Beach to take a ride on one of the well-known tuk-tuk tours offered there.

We travel along the seafront in a brilliant yellow tuktuk as the crescent-shaped beach at Airlie Bay is bathed in a gentle golden glow from the late afternoon sun. The horn is being used as a bit of a novelty for the passengers, but my six-year-old son is constantly tooting it and the birds are tweeting like crazy as they fly between branches on the palm trees overhead.

As he pedals the little electric car, our guide Steve Whitton remarks, “The kids really like it.” “Even adults enjoy it.”

As we proceed down the walkway, we see a barefoot A doppelgänger for Bob Marley plucking his guitar. Steve says to him, “Hey brother, you’ll have to come and jam with me.” “I perform piano two nights a week at Breeze Bar.”

As rickshaws, or tuktuks, are uncommon in Australia but a common means of transportation in Asian nations like Thailand and India. However, they have proven to be popular in Airlie Beach, particularly with tourists from cruise ships who are eager to see the sights in a condensed amount of time.
